The Scarecrow
By now you’ve probably seen Chipotle’s latest ad on youtube. The ad and Fiona Apple’s voice has been in my head all week. I’ve been tweeting, posting and discussing it quite a bit. And I’m not the only one. With over 6 million views in the past 10 days, it’s definitely gone viral. The ad is creative, catchy and emotionally triggering. Some will say it’s just a manipulative, corporate tactic to sell their product, and while I don’t disagree, I do think the ad has got people thinking and talking about where their food comes from so I think it’s a step in the right direction. I especially like that at the end of the video you see the scarecrow harvesting, cooking and serving only plants and vegetables, there’s no sign of meat! Much to my delight (and surprise) the ad seems to lean in a plant-based direction. The ad, at the very least, has food consciousness coming into the mainstream conversation and this is a good thing regardless of whether you’re an omnivore, carnivore or herbivore. If you haven’t seen it, check it out. Curious to know what you think…do you like the ad? What does it elicit in you?
Good for Chipolte and good for you Ted!
Thanks Mike. How’s your plant based diet coming?
Great! Melissa hosts a buying club at her gallery. So we get fresh organics weekly. Buying clubs are a great way to save on veggies. Hope you all are well.
Nice! Well done Mike!
Someone just posted this on Gene Baur’s page, which I found so encouraging: “My son’s 7th grade Honors Language Arts teacher showed this commercial to my son’s class last week. This quarter they are reading, discussing, and researching the book “Chew On This” and will be watching Food Inc as well. I wish more teachers could incorporate this type of innovative curriculum into teachings.” Because this reaches the mainstream, it is a more accepted type of thing for educators and others to use to reach people. There is an inherent acceptance there for those who maybe don’t think of these things on a regular basis…
So, I think it is a positive thing and evidence that this movement is… moving… forward.
Nice! So happy to hear today’s youth getting the message. Progress!!!
btw, was quite pleased to have Gene share my original post, he’s quite an inspiration!

I think it is one of those ads that walk a fine line between entertaining, informing, and manipulating. However, even little steps towards getting people to become aware and consider the issue is good. I think Chipotle makes a few gestures in a better direction, too, which is certainly better than none! Hopefully the more people have awareness, the more they will start asking for healthier more humane options. If the market demands it in enough numbers, changes could start to occur!
Thanks for the input Cinda. Sounds like we’re on the same page. Awareness appears to be happening, hoping so anyway.
Progress not perfection, I guess.
Baby steps….
