I took the train this past weekend up to NYC (my favorite city on Earth) to attend The Seed Experience. It’s a two day vegan immersion expo. There were dozens of vendors with goodies to sample as well as some amazing speakers, the main reason I went. I was pretty stoked to meet all my favorite peeps and to be around so many like minded people.
Rich Roll was at the top of my list of people I wanted to meet. Having read his book Finding Ultra, I felt like I knew him and more importantly, could relate to him. He had been living a toxic lifestyle to the point of being short of breath just climbing the stairs, then turned it around to become one of the fittest men on Earth (completing the equivalent of 5 Ironman’s on 5 islands in one week!). While I have no plans on attempting even one Ironman and I’m far from being a professional athlete, I can relate to living a toxic lifestyle then turning it around to living a very healthy, active lifestyle. Rich is a cool, laid back dude with a truly inspiring story. I highly recommend his book. He also has a great line of nutritional products, Jai Lifestyle.
Brendan Brazier is another world class athlete. This guys knows his stuff. Any time someone challenges me about my plant based diet, I wish I could respond as intelligently and as informed as Brendan. He has approached his sport, triathlons, scientifically with utter precision. He says while most athletes have somewhat similar training regimens, the secret to athletic success is in the recovery time between workouts. Through lots of trial and error he has discovered that by eating a whole foods, plant based diet he is able to recover faster and stronger than ever before. He emphasizes eating alkalinizing foods such as green leafy vegetables to get our ph levels more balanced. The traditional American diet and lifestyle is pretty acidic. He details this all and more in his book Thrive which I recommend. He is also the creator of a great line of protein and nutritional products, called Vega. I really enjoyed meeting Kathly Patalsky (Happy Healthy Life & Finding Vegan) and Gena Hamshaw (Choosing Raw) as I am a big fan of their blogs! Check them out, I’m sure you’ll be a fan too. Both girls are super nice, energetic, fun, creative and motivated. Kathy is quite the photographer too, her food photos always make me hungry. Be sure to check out her new book 365 Vegan Smoothies Book, due out soon! I predict more great things from these girls and look forward to seeing what they do next. Stay tuned…
I also got to meet JL Fields from JLgoesVegan. She has an inspiring story of having recreated herself in her mid 40’s, I like believing this could be true for me too:) She is very kind and generous of spirit as one would imagine from such an animal lover. Keep an eye out for her new book Vegan For Her due out soon. Wishing her the best!
All in all, it was a great event, my first time attending. I’ll be back next year…. who knows…maybe as a presenter… just setting the intention:)
